Final Fantasy XIV Bringing Dark Knight, Flying Mounts, and More

Dark KnightThe Dark Knight has been revealed as one of the new jobs for the Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward expansion.

The initial expansion announcement revealed a new level cap, areas, dungeons, and jobs, among other content.

In a summary of the Opening Ceremonies and Keynote at the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival in London, Gamer Escape reports that Director and Producer Naoki Yoshida specified several of these new features, among which include the new Dark Knight job.

The Dark Knight will be a tank role armed with a two-handed greatsword and the power of darkness. No base class will be required to unlock the job. In contrast with the Paladin’s use of a sword and shield to mitigate damage through parrying and blocking, the Dark Knight will mitigate damage through dodging.

A second new job is also incoming with the Heavensward expansion, but it will not be revealed until December during the Fan Fest in Tokyo. Yoshida did tease the new job by wearing a 007 t-shirt and using his hands to make gun poses, perhaps in reference to a new ranged-dps or healer/support job.

Other confirmed additions include two new beast tribes, the Vanu Vanu and Gnath, and their respective primals Bismarck and Ravana. Flying mounts will be introduced, beginning with black chocobos, which will be used to explore the new open world areas introduced in Heavensward. Additional flying mounts will include single-rider airships, among others. At least six flying mounts are in development for the expansion, but there may be more.

New features much to be released much sooner than the Heavensward expansion are inbound with the upcoming patch 2.4, Dreams of Ice,  which was anticipated to release this month, although the exact release date has not yet been released.

Editor’s note: Patch 2.4 released on October 28, 2014. (Revised 11/7/2014)
